Wieligman Era Begins for Cowgirl Softball
September 25, 2006 | Cowgirl Softball
“Everything is going good,” Wieligman said. “We are woking hard and getting a lot of reps in. It is getting time to start playing games.
“We have to start establishing what Oklahoma State softball is going to be about. We want to play a good brand of ball.”
OSU finished last season with a 21-29 record and beat top-seeded Texas at the Big 12 Tournament. Texas went on to advance to the College World Series.
The Cowgirls have eight seniors on the roster to help ease Wieligman into his role as head coach. All-Big 12 outfielder Lauren Kitchens returns after leading the team in hitting last spring, and pitcher Jessica Hoppock after throwing 230.1 innings last season.
Senior Shanel Scott set the career mark for stolen bases in just the third game of the year last season. She also became just the second player in school history to score 100 runs for a career.
Scott will once again set the tone for the Cowgirls at the top of the lineup, but Wieligman stressed pitching and defense as the biggest needs for improvement.
