Loyola Marymount Hands Cowgirls First Loss, 1-0
September 10, 2006 | Cowgirl Soccer
OSU fell to 4-1-1 on the season, while LMU stayed unbeaten with a 3-0-2 record. The loss snaps an unbeaten streak of 43 games against regular season non-conference opponents.
With 50 seconds remaining, Brandi Young crossed a ball into the box and Jamie Bell headed it past OSU goalkeeper Jeanne Rankin for the game winner.
“We dominated play in the first half,” co-head coach Karen Hancock said. “I thought they had the better play in the second half. They had their chances to score and we had our chances to score. It was a very even game and we just came out on the short end of the stick.”
“They are a good team,” co-head coach Colin Carmichael said. “It was a close game. We dominated play in the first half and had three or four good scoring opportunities, and they dominated play in the second half and had three or four good scoring opportunities.”
The Cowgirls out shot the Lions 13-8 and had seven corner kicks to just two for LMU, but OSU could not squeeze one past LMU keeper Joslyn Slovek.
OSU completely controlled the first half. The Cowgirls out shot LMU 6-0 and earned six corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, but had nothing to show for it.
The momentum shifted in the second half. The Lions took five shots in the second half to just four for OSU. Loyola Marymount almost grabbed the lead on two occasions when Lauren Shanklin hit the crossbar in the 55th minute and Bell hit the post in the 64th minute.
The Cowgirls attacked late trying to get a goal to avoid overtime. Bridget Miller fired a shot wide. Ashlyn Brantley and Siera Strawser both followed with shots that were wide of the mark.
The overtime period was even as each team got off three shots. The Lions took the last shot, however, and ended the game on the header by Bell.
Oklahoma State begins Big 12 play next weekend when it travels to Norman to face Bedlam rival Oklahoma with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
