Gray finished 20th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase prelims with a time of 8:56.15, ending a spectacular junior campaign for the junior from Tacoma, Wash. Arizona State junior Aaron Aguayo garnered first-place honors in the event with a time of 8:38.28.
Vail, a redshirt freshman from Gresham, Ore., saw his season come to a close as well as he finished 24th with a time of 14:25.45 in the 5,000-meter run prelims. Shadrock Songok of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished first in the event with a time of 13:55.32.
“Joe has out worked so many people to get to this point,” said Cowboy assistant coach Dave Smith. “And for Ryan to accomplish everything that he has as a freshman has been incredible. This kid is so talented and he will definitely be back next year.”
“It was a tough day for us, but these guys have had a great season and they have worked so hard to get here,” said Smith. “To have three kids in the NCAA Championships that will all be returning next year is huge for this program and I think it says a lot about what this team is going to accomplish in the next few years.”
Cowboy sophomore David Jankowski will represent the Pokes in the 10,000-meter run tomorrow. That event is set to begin at 10 p.m. CST at Sacramento State's Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.
