Equestrian Concludes its Final IHSA National Championships
May 08, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Oklahoma State's equestrian team wrapped up the final day of competition, and the team's last appearance, at the 2006 IHSA National Championships in Harrisburg, Pa., on Sunday.
The only rider to compete for the Cowgirls on Sunday was Senior Laryn Burns. The Stillwater, Okla., native, came through with a second-place finish in Beginner Horsemanship.
Overall, Oklahoma State crowned two individual national champions, Katie Davis and Brianne Wiebe, at this year's IHSA National Championships. The Cowgirls had two reserve champions and eight riders finish in the top five in their respective events.
The Hunt Seat team qualified for nationals and finished in seventh place overall.
O-State also had a rider in each discipline's high point rider competition. Bailey Mahoney placed ninth in the Cacchione Cup, the Hunt Seat competition, while Brianne Wiebe finished third in the AQHA High Point Rider competition.
This will be the final IHSA National Championships that Oklahoma State will compete in as a varsity program. For the past several years, the NCAA has granted a waiver that allowed equestrian programs to compete in both collegiate equestrian organizations, the IHSA and Varsity Equestrian. Next season, the Cowgirls will only compete in Varsity Equestrian events. These events will only involve equestrian programs that are varsity sports at their universities.
