Cowgirls Split double header with Kansas
April 02, 2006 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State's softball team split a double header with Kansas as Lauren Kitchens scored the only run of the first game to beat KU 1-0 in eight innings, and it was all Kansas in game two as it run ruled the Cowgirls, 12-0, on Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.
OSU is still .500 on the year at 16-16 and 2-2, while KU moved to 18-17 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.
The Cowgirl offense sputtered against KU starter Kassie Humphreys. OSU went without a hit through seven innings, while Humphreys racked up 11 strikeouts. Jessica Hoppock matched her pitch for pitch holding the Jayhawks to just four hits, while striking out 10. The two pitchers finished the game with 12 and 11 strikeouts, respectively.
Courtney Totte kept OSU in the game with two defensive plays throwing out Destiny Frankenstein trying to steal and recording a force out at second base on an attempted sacrifice bunt.
Lauren Kitchens had the first hit of the game for the Cowgirls lining a single into crightfield in the eighth inning, and she advanced to second on a throwing error by the rightfielder. Shianne Cruce advanced her to third on a sacrifice bunt. Krystle Sanchez followed with a ground ball to shortstop that momentarily held Kitchens at third. Kitchens broke for home on the throw and beat the relay from first to score the lone run of the game.
Hoppock went through the heart of the Kansas order getting Frankenstein to fly out, striking out Serena Settlemier and Jessica Moppin popped out to end the game.
The second game was all Jayhawks as KU jumped on the Cowgirls in the first inning for four runs. Kansas had five hits in the inning with three of them being doubles.
The Jayhawks added five more runs in the second inning capped by a grand slam by Settlemier, who went hitless in the first game. The Jayhawks continued to pour it on adding three more runs in the frame for an eight-run inning to go up 12-0.
