No. 47 Cowgirls Cruise to Sixth Straight Victory
April 14, 2006 | Cowgirl Tennis
It was Oklahoma State's (12-7) second shutout of the season and they now lead the all-time series with UTEP 3-0.
The Cowgirls got off to a quick start in doubles play when Zana Masnic and Yawna Allen improved their record to 5-2 at No. 1 doubles. The duo played well and quickly defeated Katherine Palider and Danielle King 8-1.
O-State clinched the doubles point at No. 2 doubles when Iryna Tkachenko and Marta Tsivka disposed of Teri Wilkerson and Megan Pritchard 8-3.
UTEP stopped the Cowgirls bid for a sweep at No. 3 doubles. Lauren Simmons and Zuzanna Osinska were beaten, 8-6, by Amber Brightly and Vicky Michaud.
Oklahoma State continued to roll in singles action as they won all six matches with five of the wins coming in straight sets. UTEP was forced to bump all their players up one spot when No. 1 player Teri Wilkerson was injured in doubles play.
Masnic continued her solid play as the senior beat Sandra Spirta, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Masnic has now won five of her last six individual matches.
Simmons, the reining Big 12 Player of the Week, extended her personal win streak to five with a, 6-1, 6-1, victory over Pritchard. The junior now has a 6-1 record at No. 2 singles this season.
The Cowgirls clinched the match at No. 1 singles when Tkachenko defeated Palider 6-0, 6-3. Tkachenko, an All-Big 12 selection last season, has now won three matches in a row.
At No. 5 singles, Tsivka beat Michaud 6-0, 6-2. The junior has now won and impressive six matches in a row and leads the team in victories with 16.
Jennifer Poskitt had another solid outing at No. 6 singles. The junior beat Brightly, 6-0, 6-4, to win her fourth match in a row.
The Miners looked like they might break through an avoid the shutout with a win at No. 4 singles. Allen won the first set, 6-3, against King but King battled back and took the second set 6-3. Allen pulled out the hard fought victory by winning the third set tiebreaker 10-4. The newcomer is now 3-1 since returning to the individual lineup after sustaining an injury.
Oklahoma State will be at home for the final time this season when they host No. 42 Nebraska in a big conference match on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
