Equestrian Captures Zone 7 Championship
April 10, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
“We are thrilled to be taking the team to nationals,” said assistant coach Suzanne Flaig. “We had worthy competition and our girls rode well. In addition to the team, we are also pleased to be taking a strong contingent of individuals.”
Oklahoma State won six of eight classes in the team competition to outscore Region I champion New Mexico State 52-44. With the win, the Hunt Seat team now advances to the IHSA National Championships that will be held in Harrisburg, Pa., on May 4-7. It was the fourth Zone 7 Championships the Hunt Seat team has won in the program's history.
The Cowgirls started strong in the team competition by sweeping through the Fences competition. Michelle Woolschlager, Brittany Myers and Paige Hortman all took home top honors in the team competitions of Intermediate, Novice and Open Fences, respectively.
Woolschlager again added to the team scoring by winning the team portion of Intermediate Flat. O-State completed the team scoring when Katie Davis placed first in Walk Trot and Katie Cope won first in Walk-Trot Canter.
OSU continued their impressive day in both the Hunt Seat and Western individual competitions by crowing six individual Zone 7 Champions and advancing 11 riders to the IHSA National Championships.
In the Western competition, the Cowgirls crowned three Zone 7 Champions out of the four classes in which they had riders competing. Brianne Wiebe, the Zone 7 Region II Western high point rider of the year, placed first in Open Horsemanship. Laryn Burns and Amanda Yancey also took home zone titles in Beginner and Intermediate Horsemanship, respectively. All three riders will advance to the IHSA National Championship later this year. Rachel Currat also qualified for nationals with a second place finish in Reining.
OSU also crowned three Zone 7 Champions in the individual Hunt Seat competition. Natalie Chappell and Myers took home the top prize in Novice Fences and Flat, respectively. Bailey Mahoney, the Zone 7 Region II Hunt Seat high point rider of the year, won the zone championship in Open Flat.
Caitlyn Roberts, Woolschlager, Yancey and Cory Johnson all finished runner-up in their respective individual classes and will also advance to the IHSA National Championships.
Oklahoma State equestrian will next be in action when the Hunt and Western teams compete at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., April 20-22.
