Cowgirls Eliminated at Buzz Classic

Oklahoma State's softball team was eliminated from the Buzz Classic by Virginia, 2-1, in the quarterfinals on Sunday morning at the Al Bishop Complex in Marietta, Ga.

OSU (7-11) had defeated Virginia (11-3) in pool play, but Virginia scored a run in the fifth inning and held off the Cowgirls to advance to the semifinals.

The Cavaliers took the lead in the top of the third on a two RBI single by Michelle Salmiery.

The Cowgirls tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Ashleigh Tweed singled and stole second and came around to score on a single by Kim Kaye.

UVA took the lead in the fifth inning taking advantage of a Cowgirl error to score an unearned run. It was all Karla Wiburn needed as the only two base runners she allowed came in the fourth inning when OSU scored. Wilburn retired the final 10 Cowgirl hitters in order.

Jessica Hoppock (3-7) pitched well allowing just one earned run in seven innings, but gave up two runs on five hits to suffer the loss.

Oklahoma State finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and have won five of its last seven games.

The Cowgirls return home to face Oklahoma City at Cowgirl Stadium on Tuesday at 5 p.m. followed by a game against Wichita State on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
