Cowgirls Split Double Header with Missouri State

Oklahoma State's softball team split a double header with Missouri State winning the first game, 3-2, on a Kim Kaye home run in the ninth inning and losing the second game, 9-3, at the Cowgirl Softball Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Cowgirls won the first game of the double header in dramatic fashion. Kaye hit a walkoff home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Cowgirls just their third win of the season. It was Kaye's second home run of the year.

OSU fell behind early in the second game and could not sustain a rally and eventually lost 9-3. Oklahoma State is now 3-10 on the year, while Missouri State is 7-5.

OSU took advantage of a Missouri State error to score two unearned runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Shallan Watson had the big hit in the inning with an RBI single.

Missouri State came back with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game. Kristina Giustozzi came in for Jessica Hoppock in the seventh inning and shut the Bears offense down. Giustozzi pitched 2 2/3 inning of no hit relief to set the stage for Kaye's dramatic blast and earn her first win of the season.

Missouri State scored runs in each of the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead. The Bears added three more runs in the fifth to go up 6-0. The Cowgirls mounted a rally in the bottom half of the fifth. Shianne Cruce, pinch hitting for Shanel Scott, was hit by a pitch to score a run and Courtney Totte plated another run with an infield single.

Kaye, the hero from the first game, represented the tying run at the plate, but she stranded the bases loaded when she struck out swinging. Samantha Fleeman ended any thoughts of a rally with a huge home run over the centerfield wall to lead off the sixth inning. Fleeman went 4-for-5 in the ball game.

The Bears added two more runs in the sixth inning, while the Cowgirls plated a run on an RBI groundout by Ashlyn Watson.

Oklahoma State will travel east to participate in the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech in Marietta, Ga. The Cowgirls play Friday against South Dakota State at noon followed by a game with Virginia at 2 p.m.
