Equestrian Extends Regional Point Lead Over Texas A&M
February 05, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
“The girls rode very well once again,” said head coach Larry Sanchez. “Their attitude could not be better right now.”
The Cowgirls scored 34 points to take the top spot. Texas A&M was runner-up with 29 points and Stephen F. Austin rounded out the top three with 17 points.
“I have to admit, it is just not enough to ride well,” said Sanchez. “You cannot make any mistakes. That is how tough out region is. It comes down to who does not make mistakes.”
The Cowgirls once again started fast by sweeping the reining competition. Junior Brianne Wiebe continued her hot streak by winning her reining class for the second day in a row and her third victory overall this weekend. Wiebe was also the reserve high point rider on Sunday.
Oklahoma State junior Katie Bohr won the day's other class of reining. The Cowgirls won all four reining classes this weekend.
The Cowgirls also rode well in the horsemanship classes, winning six of nine classes.
Junior Madison Ramirez picked up her second win of the weekend and junior Brandi Thomas and sophomore Samantha Davidson both, also, took home top honors in their respective classes.
Sophomore Lee Anna McNally and freshmen Katie Davis and Leigha Stevenson also placed first in their classes of horsemanship.
Oklahoma State now will have a seven point lead over Texas A&M going into next month's regular season western finale in College Station, Texas.
“This is far from over,” said Sanchez. “This is going to go down to the wire. Seven points could come to down to one class.”
Oklahoma State equestrian will next be in action when the region-leading hunt team travels to College Station, Texas, February 18-19 for their final two shows of the regular season.
