No. 47 Fresno State Outlast Cowgirls

For the second consecutive day, the Cowgirls (4-2) fell behind early because they could not secure the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Iryna Tkachenko and Marta Tsivka battled hard but the seventh-ranked doubles tandem of Katherina Winterhalter and Lucia Sanz were too much and won, 8-6.
The Cowgirls bounced back when Zana Masnic and Yawna Allen used an early lead to beat Tinesta Rowe and Magdalina Tokarska, 8-6, at the No. 2 slot. The doubles point came down to Lauren Simmons and Zuzanna Osinska but the pair suffered their first loss of the year in a heartbreaker. The duo lead 5-2 early but Jacqueline Haskett and Melanie Gloria battled back to win in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (1).
Unlike on Friday, the Cowgirls could not bounce back in singles action and lost four of six matches.
Sophomore Yawna Allen bounced back nicely from a disappointing loss on Friday to tie up the match. The Phoenix, Ariz., native beat Tinesta Rowe in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 4 position. The Cowgirls fell behind again when Iryna Tkachenko was beaten by No. 61 Melanie Gloria, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 1 slot.
At No. 5 singles, Sophomore Jessica Collins lost her first match of the season. Collins was beaten by Magdalina Tokarska, 6-3, 6-2. Fresno State clinched the win at No. 4 singles. Junior Lauren Simmons won the first set, 6-4, against No. 83 Lucia Sanz but dropped the final two, 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Zana Masnic battled hard through out her match but lost in a tough one, 5-7, 7-6, 10-7, to Katherine Winterhalter, at the No. 3 position. The Cowgirls finished the day on a strong note when junior Marta Tsivka continued her strong play by winning her match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
The Cowgirls will finish up their road trip by playing No. 73 Boise State at 12 p.m. PST at the Fertitta Tennis Center on Sunday.
