English Team Brings Home Regional Championship
February 20, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Oklahoma State beat both Texas A&M and LSU by four points which gave them a 236-213 edge over the Aggies in the standings. This is the fourth time the English team has won the regional championship. The win advances the Cowgirls to the Zone 7 championships on March 9 in Stillwater. Oklahoma State will face New Mexico State for the right to represent the zone at the IHSA National Championships.
“We are very pleased to bring the regional championship back home to Oklahoma State,” said assistant coach Suzanne Flaig. “It was especially encouraging to win on the road.”
Not only did the team win the regional championship, but sophomore Bailey Mahoney won the regional high point rider award with a first and second place finish on Sunday. The Florida native also tied for the day's reserve high point rider honors.
“We have never had a regional high point rider at Oklahoma State,” said Flaig. “We look forward to her representing the school and region well at the national finals.”
Eighth other Cowgirls picked up first place finishes on Sunday. Freshman Misty Stutsman picked up her second win in as many days when she placed first in her section of Open Fences. Another freshman, Samantha Collingsworth, also earned her second first-place finish of the weekend in her section of Open Flat.
Junior Erin McDonald also was also a multiple winner this weekend. McDonald placed first in her section of Novice Flat on Sunday. Sophomore Megan McVay also picked up a first-place finish in her section of Novice Flat
