Cowgirls Set for Tough Road Test
February 16, 2006 | Cowgirl Tennis
“This is going to be a tough weekend, but our schedule is tough and our girls have to be ready for it,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski.
The Cowgirls (2-0) will take on 38th-ranked New Mexico on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Lobos (4-1) are coming off a 6-1 win over Texas Tech last weekend and have two individuals ranked in the top 45. Maja Kovacek is ranked 20th and beat Cowgirl Ira Tkachenko in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year. Kovacek teams with Iva Gersic, the 45th-ranked individual in the country, to form the No. 3 ranked doubles team.
The Cowgirls are 10-1 all-time against the Lobos and won the last meeting 5-1, in 1996.
On Sunday, OSU will face off against New Mexico State at 10 a.m. The Aggies' (5-1) only loss of the season was a 7-0 setback against UNLV. OSU is 4-1 all-time against New Mexico State and won the last meeting in 2004, 4-1.
“The girls played well last weekend,” said Lubicz-Majewski. “Hopefully, the can continue and have a good attitude.”
In their opening weekend, the Cowgirls swept a pair of matches against Texas-Arlington and Missouri State.
