Cowgirls Beat Big 12-Rival Texas A&M
November 09, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Â
The Cowgirls again returned home with two MVP honors, one from each discipline from the competition. Sophomore Sam Collingsworth was named MVP for the second consecutive weekend for the equitation on the flat. Her score of 85 beat out senior Erica Palomo's score of 80. Also earning an MVP award was freshman Ashley Koch, who continues to make some impressive rides early in her career for the Cowgirls. Her score of 73 beat out sophomore Sibyl Parsons' 72.5. Each of the girls' scores narrowly edged A&M's top rides.
Â
The first class of the show was the equitation over fences. The Cowgirls tied the Aggies 4-4 in the fences. Giving the Cowgirls the four points over fences were seniors Paige Hortman and Caitlyn Roberts and sophomores Jaclyn Osterstock and Devon Smithburg. Hortman beat out A&M's Palomo by six points, earning an 80 on her ride. Roberts, having a debut ride at the new Varsity format, recorded the highest score of the day with an 84. Her ride beat out A&M freshman Lindsay Smith by two points. Also beating her opponent by two was Smithburg, who rode against sophomore Ali Mueller. Osterstock, with the highest margin difference against her opponent, scored a 79 against Viviana Cordero's 73.Â
Â
With the scores tied, the Cowgirls' English team needed to pull out a big win over the Aggies in the equitation on the flat in order to secure an English win. And score big they did, winning six of the possible eight rides to give OSU a 10-6 advantage over the Aggies. The six points came from riders Sam Collingsworth, Charlotte Collingsworth, Michelle Woolschlager, Cory Johnson, Allyson Blais, and Bailey Mahoney. Each of the girls rode very smart and outscored the Aggies by at least 2 points on up to a 17 point difference.
Â
The horsemanship class again was faced with a tie against the Aggies, 4-4. Earning points for the Cowgirls were freshmen Ashley Koch and Suzanne Randolph, junior Samantha Davidson and senior Baily Nicholson. Randolph, Davidson, a Varsity Championship rider in 2006, and Nicholson all outscored their opponents by 2.5 points.
Â
The Cowgirls were outscored by the Aggies in the reining section by four points. Earning the two points for OSU were veterans Jacque Roberts and Rachell Shobe. Roberts, a 2006 Varsity Championship rider in reining, outscored A&M's Hannah Lindskog by 0.5 of a point. Freshman Shobe made her mark in the arena as well, earning points yet again for the Cowgirls by beating out sophomore Crissy Greebon by 1.5 points.
Â
With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 4-1 on the season.
