Softball Signs Five in Early Signing Period
November 16, 2006 | Cowgirl Softball
Joining the Cowgirls in the fall of 2007 are Alysia Hamilton, Amanda Crabtree, Sarah Odom, Ashley Boyd and Mariah Gearhart.
Hamilton is the only Oklahoma product set to join the Cowgirls. Hamilton is a left-handed hitting infield prospect from Moore High School. She can play both second and third base. Hamilton helped lead the Lions to a state championship in the fall of 2006. She was named an all-state selection her senior year, while hitting a career .457 and being named the team's Defensive Player of the Year. Wieligman says she is a scrappy player that does the little things it takes to win games.
Crabtree hails from Kingwood, Texas. She is a hard throwing right-handed pitcher, and she will make an immediate impact in the Cowgirl rotation as well as in the lineup. Crabtree is a three-time all-district selection. As a junior, she was named third team All-Greater Houston and was second team all-region. She helped lead the Texas Eclipse to a seventh-place finish at Gold Nationals.
Odom comes to Stillwater from Burleson, Texas. She is a left-handed pitcher that starred on the Sudden Impact Gold, and offers a change of pace from the rest of the Cowgirl pitching staff. Odom was named to the All-Area Super Team by the Fort Worth Star Telegram in both 2005 and 2006. She was listed as a top 10 pitcher by the Texas Girls Coaches Association and was named the Johnson County MVP.
Boyd is a catcher from Beaumont, Texas. She possesses a strong arm and a strong bat that will hit in the middle of the lineup. Boyd hit .425 her junior year and led the team in hits, average and RBIs. She was named a first team Southeast Texas Super Gold Team. Boyd helped lead the Beaumont Blast to a 13th-place finish at the AFA Nationals this summer.
Gearhart will attend Oklahoma State from Chula Vista, Calif., where she attends Bonita Vista High School. She is a switch hitting shortstop with good speed and plays solid defense. Gearhart helped lead the San Diego Breakers to a ninth-place finish at the Amateur Softball Association National Championships. She was named to the first team All-Mesa League both as a sophomore and a junior. Gearhart was the team's Most Valuable Player and named the best defensive player as a junior.
“This is a hard working class,” Wieligman said. ”They all possess the necessary qualities you like to see in a student-athlete. This a good group to help get Oklahoma State softball started in the direction we want to go.”
