Cowgirl Golfers Win Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown by 10 Strokes

“We definitely worked really hard the last three weeks,” said head coach Laura Matthews. “We knew after the first three tournaments that we were nowhere near where we needed to be as a top team.
“(Assistant coaches) Donnie (Darr) and Alan (Bratton) did a great job of preparing the team while I was in South Africa. When I got back, they all told me how well they were putting and hitting the ball.”
Cowgirl sophomore Pernilla Lindberg finished tied for second, falling to individual medalist Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M by two strokes. The Sweden native tied Arizona State's Azahara Munoz with a three-day total of 211. Lindberg shot a final-round 68 which included six birdies.
Freshman Sarah Bradley tied for fifth individually with a 213, tying Arizona's Alison Walshe. Bradley, originally from New Zealand, shot a 69-72-72 for her three-round total.
The win marked the first for OSU since April of 2006 when the Cowgirls won the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. Tuesday's team score of 280 during the second round marks the lowest team total in a single round in school history. The previous record was a 281 at the TOPY Cup in 2002.
Every Cowgirl recorded at least one round under par during the tournament. Sophomore Karin Kinnerud shot a three-under 69 during the second round and tied for 12th place with a 217. Senior Mallorie Underwood shot a 71 during the final round and tied for 23rd with a 221. Senior Candy Herrera had a two-under 70 during the second round and finished tied for 31st with a 223.
The Showdown was the final tournament of the fall season for the Cowgirls. They will resume play on Feb. 12, 2007, when they travel to Palos Verdes, Calif., to compete in the Regional Challenge.
