Cowgirls Hit the Road to Texas
October 30, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
After a two week break, the Cowgirls hit the road for their first away head-to-head match ups with Baylor and Texas A&M. So far this season the Cowgirls hold a 3-0 record.
They started their season out strong with a near shut out show to TCU, 15-1. The English side turned in a perfect score, winning all 8 classes. The Cowgirls also claimed two of the possible two MVP awards for the English team. Junior Natalie Chappell, who competed in the Novice division in the IHSA competitions, claimed the MVP award for equitation over fence class, and Senior Cory Johnson received the MVP award for equitation on the flat. The western team turned in an almost perfect score, just falling short by one class in the horsemanship and winning all the reining classes. Junior Sam Davidson was awarded the MVP honors in the horsemanship class.
The Following week the Cowgirls hosted Baylor and Kansas State. The English team still holding strong, defeated the Bears 9-3 with a combined fence and flat score. During this competition many of the incoming freshmen got some playing time in the arena. Riding fences for the first time in their collegiate career were Jaclyn Osterstock and Ally Blais. Blais also had a debut ride in the equitation on the flat class against Baylor as well. Michelle Woolschlager was awarded the MVP for equitation on the flat. The western team turned in a score of 8-4 against the Bears in a combined total of the reining and horsemanship classes. After a spectacular ride, Jacque Roberts was awarded the MVP award for reining. Making collegiate debut rides in the reining class were freshmen Molly Tipton and Leah Kuehn.
The Cowgirls held on to their winning streak with a very close match against Kansas State the following day. They initially tied 13-13 and, to break the tie, every rider's raw score is added and the lowest score is dropped in each class. The Cowgirls came out on top with a win over the Lady Wildcats, 1720 to 1698.5. Claiming yet another MVP honor was sophomore Michelle Woolschlager in the equitation on the flat class. The English team turned in an 8-6 win over the Wildcats combining flat and fence wins and the western team fell 5-7 to the Wildcats combining reining and horsemanship wins.
The Cowgirls are looking forward to making their first road trip of the season. Saturday's events are schedule to begin in Baylor's new facility, the Willis Family Equestrian Center, at 10:00 am.
Sunday the Cowgirls head a little further south to College Station, Texas to compete against the Fightin Texas Aggies. So far this season they too are an undefeated team. The competition will start at 11:00 am in the W. Dick Freeman Arena.
