Oklahoma State Cross Country Dominates Academic All-Big 12 Teams
October 25, 2006 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
The Cowgirls placed a league-best 11 student-athletes on the first team. All 11 received first-team honors. Leading the way for OSU was Cowgirl sophomore Jennifer Clarke of Stillwater. Clarke, a biological science major, was one of only 13 runners with a 4.00 grade-point average.
“This is the second year in a row that we have had the most student athletes named to the team and we are very proud of that,” said Cowgirl head coach Rene Sepulvada. “I think it says a lot about the kind of kids that we have in our program. We give a lot of credit to the people in our student athlete academic center. They do a tremendous job working with our student athletes.”
The Cowboys finished second in the conference by placing nine student athletes on the team, eight of whom received first-team honors.
“Our guys know that they are at OSU to get an education,” said Cowboy head coach Dave Smith. “We tell our kids from the time they get here that academics come first and running comes second. It is a tradition that Coach (Dick) Weis started a long time ago and it is to the point now that our kids just know that when they get here.”
In order to be nominated for All-Conference honors, student athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher and must have participated in 60 percent or more of his/her team's scheduled contests. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
