Tkachenko Advance to Quarterfinals at Central Region Championships

Oklahoma State tennis player Iryna Tkachenko won two matches on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
In the round of 32, Tkachenko defeated Katie Lozanova to advance to the round of 16.
Once she got to the round of 16, the junior faced a tough and familiar opponent in teammate Yawn Allen. Allen advanced to the round by rolling against Wichita State's Tori Browning, 6-1, 6-1.
As anticipated, the first set was neck and neck as Tkachenko won, 7-5. The Ukraine native had a, 1-0, lead in the second set before Allen had to retire with an injury. Tkachenko will face Tulsa's Santie Delport on Saturday for the right to advance to the semifinals.
In other singles action, the Cowgirls had to face top competition as freshman Natalia Shatkovskaya and senior Marta Tsivka faced the two-top seeds in the tournament.
Shatkovskaya, undefeated so far in her short-Cowgirl career, was defeated by the region's top seed, Nebraska's Ela Kaluder, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 16.
It was Bedlam as Tsivka, the Big 12 Champion at No. 5 singles last year, face the region's second-seed and Oklahoma's top player in Gabby Baker. Tsivka hung tough and took Baker to the third set before falling, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
In consolation play, the Cowgirls have on player remaining as Jennifer Poskitt defeated UALR's Rosario Negrete, 6-3, 6-1.
The action will continue on Saturday, as Tkachenko and Poskitt try to make their way through their respective brackets at the 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa.
