Cowgirls Advance Regional-High Five at Championships

Five members of Oklahoma State's women's tennis team, the most of any school, advanced to the round of 32 at the 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa on Thursday.
Natalia Shatkovskaya continued her impressive fall as the freshman had a convincing, 6-0, 6-1, win over Southeast Missouri's Julia Masetti. Shatkovskaya has not lost more than two games in a set she has won this fall. She is 4-0 in her young career and has only surrendered one set.
Lauren Simmons also came through with an impressive first-round victory on Thursday as the senior defeated Tulsa's Agostina Santoro, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the round of 32.
Junior Yawna Allen kept the Cowgirls rolling when she downed Bryce Kristal, Southeast Missouri State, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
OSU also got a solid performance from Iryna Tkachenko in the first round. The junior was victorious over Tulsa's Thalia Diaz-Barriga, 6-0, 7-5. She has now won three-straight matches this fall.
Marta Tsivka rounded out the five that advanced as she defeated Missouri's Chrissy Svetlic, 6-2, 7-5. The senior has a tough match on Friday as she faces Oklahoma's Gabby Baker, the region's second seed and 84th-ranked player in the country.
In doubles action, Allen and Shatkovskaya continued their already impressive day as the pair advanced to the round of 16 at the regional championships after defeating Iowa State's Derioun and Palen in the second round, 8-1. The duo received a first-round bye.
The 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships will continue Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
