Equestrian Season Opener against TCU
October 02, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
- Oklahoma State's equestrian team will open its 2006-07 season against Texas Christian University Saturday, at the Animal Science Arena, and it will feature the new Varsity style format.
The events will be at the Animal Science Arena located on McElroy and Western. The show is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am on Saturday October 7, 2006.
OSU will be represented by 16 riders in the four classes – equitation over fences, on the flat, reining and horsemanship.
The team that wins the most head-to-head classes will win the match overall. For each discipline, there will be an individual award for the most valuable player. If a tie should occur, the tie breaker will be determined by the points awarded to each rider.
Senior Katie Bohr, and Rachel Currat, sophomore Jacque Roberts, and freshman Rachel Shobe will represent the Cowgirls in the reining portion of the show. Bohr and Roberts both rode in the reining class at the Varsity Nationals in 2006. Bohr has had continued success in the reining. The NRHA holds a collegiate reining championship each year. Qualifiers from the Varsity Championship, IHSA Nationals, and overall achievement throughout the year earn spots to compete in the championship. Bohr has been able to compete in two of them throughout her career at OSU. Each time she went, she placed in the top 10 and in 2004 placed third.
The four girls that will compile the horsemanship class are seniors Brandi Thomas and Bailey Nicholson, junior Samantha Davidson, and freshman Ashley Koch. Davidson and Thomas represented the team in the horsemanship class at the Varsity Nationals competition.
On the English side of the competition, the four Cowgirls that will represent the equitation over fence class will be senior Paige Hortman, and juniors Natalie Chappell, Bailey Mahoney, and Michelle Woolschlager. Mahoney was the Cowgirls' stand-out rider last season. She was High Point rider for the region and represented the region at IHSA Nationals in the Cachionne Cup class. The Cachionne Cup is made up of the top riders from each region across the nation. Mahoney finished ninth for the cup. She also rode at the Varsity Equestrian National Championship showing in both fences and flat.
Riding equitation on the flat for the Cowgirls will be senior Cory Johnson, juniors Mahoney and Woolschlager, and sophomore Samantha Collingsworth. Woolschlager rode in the equitation on the flat at the Varsity Equestrian Nationals. She was also a team rider for the 2006 IHSA nationals in Harrisburg, PA.
The schedule for the four events is to have two arenas going simultaneously (indoor and outdoor). To start the morning off, the equitation over fence class will be in the indoor arena and the western horsemanship class will be in the outdoor arena. Once completed, the reining class will be in the indoor and the equitation on the flat class will be in the outdoor arena.
The Cowgirls are coming off of a spectacular 2005-06 season. At the Varsity Equestrian Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., the Western team walked away with the championship title. Overall, the English and Western team tied for second with University of South Carolina.
