October 15, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
The Cowgirls defeated Kansas State on Sunday to earn their third-straight win of the season at the Animal Science Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
Tensions ran tight throughout the whole show as the Cowgirls stayed neck and neck with the lady Wildcats. The Cowgirls scored 13 points as did the Wildcats. What broke the tie was adding up all the raw scores and dropping each teams lowest score from each class. The Cowgirls ended up ahead of K-State by 21.5 points. The final point spread was 1720 to 1698.5.
The show kicked off with the equitation over fences class. Sophomore Natalie Chappell had the highest fence score of the day with an 82. Her score beat out K-State's Gentry Horgin. Also earning points in the fence class, was senior Paige Hortman and freshman Jaclyn Osterstock. Even with the three wins, the Wildcats were one up on the Cowgirls with four wins in the fence class.
Horsemanship followed with the Wildcats earning four points to the Cowgirl's three. Freshman Ashley Koch had the high point ride of the day posting, a 74 for her pattern. She beat out her component, Kyla Copple. Giving the Cowgirls the rest of the points for horsemanship were seniors Brandi Thomas and Megan Brown.
The Cowgirls brought in a strong win over the Lady Wildcats in the Equitation on the flat class. They scored five out of the possible seven points. Sophomore Michelle Woolschlager earned yet another MVP award today in the flat section when she posted a 78, the highest flat score of the day. Seniors Cory Johnson, Hortman, sophomore Sam Collingsworth and freshman Ally Blais all had great patterns and beat out their competition, giving the Cowgirls the remaining points.
The closest match of the day was the final class, reining. In this class four riders, two Cowgirls and two Wildcats, posted the same score on their reining pattern. Posting the points in this section were senior Rachel Currat and freshman Rachel Shobe. The lady Wildcats earned three points in this section.
The match against Kansas State was very close. Each rider felt the pressure to step it up and ride to the best of their ability. This marks the last home show for this semester. The Cowgirls hit the rode November 4-5 to compete against Baylor and Texas A&M University.
