The Oklahoma State quarterback dazed Kansas with a 429-yard passing day that could have been closer to 600. He had two long strikes dropped, two more erased by penalties and two likely touchdown throws thwarted by defensive pass interference. As it stands, Gundy completed 27- of -35 for two touchdowns. He also scored on a pair of 1-yard sneaks to lead OSU to a comfortable 37-24 college football victory. Gundy's spectacular afternoon (best in OSU history for passing yards, third best on league charts) overshadowed the heroics of tailback Gerald Hudson. The gimpy-legged Hudson had 28 rushes for 108 yards and caught | | | Score By Quarters | | Oklahoma State 7 17 7 6 --37 Kansas 3 0 7 14 --24 | | Scoring Summary | | OSU- Gundy, 1 Run (Blanchard Kick) KU - Fleeman, 38 Field Goal OSU- Brown, 39 Pass from Gundy (Blanchard Kick) OSU- Blanchard, 30 Field Goal OSU- Vice, 30 Pass from Gundy (Blanchard Kick) OSU- Gundy, 1 Run (Blanchard Kick) KU - Douglas, 1 Run (Fleeman Kick) KU - Drayton, 57 Pass from Donohoe (Fleeman Kick) OSU- Blanchard, 22 Field Goal OSU- Blanchard, 20 Field Goal KU - Smith, 7 Pass from Donohoe (Fleeman Kick) | | First Downs | 29 | 18 | | Rushing Yards | 158 | 112 | | Passing Yards | 429 | 252 | | Passing | 27-35-1 | 17-27-2 | | Total Offense | 587 | 364 | | Fumbles-Lost | 0-0 | 1-1 | | Penalties-Yards | 9-78 | 6-65 | | Punts Average | 2-47.5 | 4-52.5 | | | OSU Leaders | | Rusher  Hudson, 28-108 Passer  Gundy, 27-35-1 (2 TD) Receiver  Mayfield, 6-89 | |
| five passes for 113. He was hauled down from behind on a 84-yard dump from Gundy in the final quarter. The 4-5 Cowboys, 3-2 in the league, rolled up 587 total yards while controlling the ball for 38 of the game's 60 minutes. It was obvious early that the Jayhawks could not stop the OSU offense. Gundy completed his first 10 passes to lead the Cowboys to a 17-3 lead. OSU had it by 24-3 at intermission and by 31-3 when it scored on its first possession of the third quarter. Kansas did make a mini-rally with two touchdowns (one after a fake punt, the other on a bomb that OSU's Joe King had slip through his hands) to make it a 34-17 on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Cowboys clinched it with a pair of field goals from Cary Blanchard, the second after Rod Smith returned an interception 38 yards to the KU 32. Kansas scored again with 1:44 left. The Cowboys had it at the KU 7 yards line as time expired. |
