Equestrian to Open Big 12 Competition
October 12, 2006 | Cowgirl Equestrian
The Oklahoma State equestrian team, coming off a big win against TCU last weekend, will compete this weekend against two Big 12 schools, Baylor and Kansas State University. The shows are set to kick off at 9:00 am on both Saturday and Sunday in the Animal Science Arena off McElroy and Western.
Baylor is starting its second year as a varsity sport. Last year at the 2006 Varsity Equestrian National Championships, its western team placed ninth and English team placed eighth. Kansas State placed sixth with both teams, respectively.
Similar to last weekend, there will be two arenas running simultaneously weather permitting. The indoor will host the jumping and reining classes while the outdoor will host the horsemanship and English flat classes.
This show marks the first Big 12 competition of the 2006-07 Varsity regular season. Kansas State and Baylor competed at an invitational in Georgia in September. Baylor defeated Kansas State, 4-3, in the English portion and tied, 4-4, in the western classes for a final score of 8-7.
The English team is going into this competition with a perfect record of 4-0 for both flat and fences. The western team is trailing close behind with a perfect 4-0 in reining and 3-1 in horsemanship.
On Saturday, each of the four classes will host six OSU riders and six Baylor riders. Sunday's events will be seven on seven against Kansas State University in each of the four events, equitation over fences and on the flat, reining and horsemanship.
The pride of OSU, Bullet and the Spirit Rider, will be making a special appearance at this Saturday's event. Bullet has been an inspirational asset teaching the “cowboy way” and school spirit on horseback to OSU since 1984. Don't forget to bring your cameras to get a picture with Bullet!
