Cowgirl Basketball Falls At Kansas, 66-46
January 23, 2006 | Cowgirl Basketball
The Cowgirls (6-11 overall, 0-6 Big 12) built a 15-7 lead after forcing the Jayhawks (13-3, 2-3) into seven turnovers in the first eight minutes. However, OSU endured a 6:25 scoreless drought that allowed KU to reel off 11 consecutive points and regain control of the game.
A layup by Amanda Foster with 3:37 remaining in the half drew the Cowgirls within one at 22-21, but they were held scoreless for the remainder of the half as the Jayhawks tallied the final eight points in the period to head into the halftime locker room up 30-21.
KU continued its run by scoring the first 12 points of the second half to watch its lead grow to 42-21 before Whitney Pegram gave OSU its first points of the half with a layup at the 12:39 mark. Crystal Kemp and Erica Hallman keyed the Jayhawk spurt, scoring six points apiece.
Kemp scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the second half. She grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds on the day as well, while Hallman added 14 points fueled by a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the 3-point line.
For the second consecutive game, the Cowgirls faced a 23-point deficit in the second half before making a run to get back into the contest
Junior Christian Hood came off the bench to spark the Cowgirls, hitting her first four shots of the second half to help slice the deficit to 12 points. The Hutchinson, Kan., native scored all 14 of her points in the second half and was one of two players to reach double figures on the afternoon. Freshman Shaunte' Smith added 11 points on the day.
OSU cut the deficit to 12 on three separate occasions, but could never trim it to single digits before the Jayhawks put the game away down the stretch.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Texas Tech at 7 p.m.
