Cowgirls end fall season in dramatic fashion
September 25, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
After beating Western Oklahoma, 14-2 in five innings, and Neosho, 9-0 in five innings, it took the Cowgirls all seven innings to beat Missouri State, 3-2.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Ashlyn Watson led off the final frame with a triple that landed at the base of the left field wall, and then the senior scored on a one-out sacrifice fly to center after colliding with the catcher.
The Cowgirls (12-0-1) trailed for the first time all day when Jessica Hoppock gave up a two-run homer to Michelle Armentrout in the top of the first inning, but they  tied the game in the bottom half the inning when Kim Kaye hit an RBI-double followed by a Shianne Cruce RBI-double.
In the Cowgirl's second game of the day, they jumped out to the early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning with two of them coming off of a single by Lauren Kitchens.
OSU tacked on three more runs in the second, highlighted by an Ashleigh Tweed RBI-sac bunt and an RBI-double Cruce, which scored Kaye, who had hit an RBI-triple earlier in the inning.
Newcomer pitcher Chelsey Barclay pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit in her final appearance of the fall.
In the first game, the Cowgirls batted around both the first and second innings, scoring six runs in each frame. OSU went on to score 14 runs on 15 hits and two errors in five innings.
Highlights in the early offensive barrage included a Krystal Sanchez two-run double in the first, a Kaye solo shot to left-center and a Tweed two-run triple down the right field line in the second.
Defensively, junior pitcher Jessica Hoppock struck out 11 hitters and gave up two runs on three hits.
The Cowgirls now have time to prepare before they begin the spring season on Feb. 10, when they travel to San Diego for the Campbell/Cartier Classic.
