Cowgirl Tennis Ready to Open 2005-06 Campaign
September 14, 2005 | Cowgirl Tennis
“It is exciting because it is the first match of the year,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “We have some new players and everyone has been practicing hard. We have been happy with practice, so far.”
The three-day tournament will take place Friday through Sunday, September 16-18, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Play will begin at 9:00 a.m. each day. The tournament field will also feature Kansas, Missouri State, Oklahoma, Tulsa and Wichita State.
The Cowgirls are returning five starters from last year's team that finished 8-15 overall and 4-8 in conference play. The Cowgirls lost to Missouri in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. They will be lead by sophomore Iryna Tkachenko, who is ranked No. 58 in the ITA preseason rankings. Tkachenko received an NCAA Tournament bid as well as being an All-Big 12 selection as a freshman last year.
“This is important because every win counts towards our ranking,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “All the teams in the tournament are from our region so it will help us.”
