Stephanie Nicholson Earns Arthur Ashe Jr. Award
May 25, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
A Tucson, Ariz., native Nicholson completed her career for the Cowgirls last week at the NCAA Regional in Tucson. She finished second on the team with a .354 batting average and set a new single season home run record with 13. Nichoslon also ranks in the top 10 for career runs, doubles, home runs, RBI and stolen bases.
The awards were inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis. All colleges and universities are invited to nominate outstanding sports scholars.
In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism. Students must also compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Black Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate minority students who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.
