May 23, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
UA's Jackie Coburn drove a 1-2 offering from Cowgirl pitcher Jessica Hoppock over the right field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Wildcats (42-10) into a Super Regional matchup against Oklahoma.
With the loss, OSU finishes its season at 35-24.
"It was a dog fight all day, basically,” Cowgirl head coach Margaret Rebenar said. “I'm proud of our girls and what they did here. Jessica [Hoppock] stepped up big for us all weekend and did a fantastic job. I'm super proud of all of them."
UA jumped out in front in the bottom of the third inning when leadoff batter Caitlin Lowe hit a solo home run over the fence in right center off Hoppock.
Hoppock, a sophomore from Haysville, Kan., threw all 28.1 innings for the Cowgirls in the tournament, posting a 2-2 record.
“Jessica did a great job for us and kept us in the game,” OSU senior outfielder Megan Carey said. “ We are really good at coming from behind, and we had a chance today. That's all you can ask for."
The Cowgirls drew even with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. After a single by sophomore catcher Courtney Totte, senior first baseman Dominique Van Nortwick reached on a Wildcat error that allowed both runners to move into scoring position.
After a failed squeeze bunt attempt, freshman second baseman Tara Jeffery delivered an RBI single to knot the score at 1-1.
The Wildcats had a chance to end the contest in the seventh, getting two runners on, but Hoppock worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.
UA pitcher Alicia Hollowell, who also picked up the win over OSU on Saturday, earned the victory and improved to 29-7 on the year.
