Cowgirls Fall To No. 1 Seed Texas A&M
May 12, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
The Aggies capitalized on a pair of walks and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Lindsay Park plated both runs with a single to center field. A&M increased its lead to 3-0 with a run in the second.
The Cowgirls cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning, breaking onto the scoreboard thanks to an A&M error. Courtney Totte touched Megan Gibson for a single then stole second and third. The sophomore raced home on the following play when the Aggie second baseman couldn't handle a hit from Tara Jeffery.
A walk and a single later, the bases were loaded and Ashlyn Watson knocked a shot to left field to send Jeffery home. OSU nearly tied the game but pinch-runner Rachel Johnson couldn't get under the tag and was called out at home.
Nicholson came up with a big-time hit in the fifth, launching her 11th home run of the year to right center to give the Cowgirls their first lead of the game at 4-3. Shanel Scott trotted home on the long ball after reaching on a single.
It didn't hold for long as A&M tied the game in the bottom of the frame then took the lead in the sixth after scoring three runs off a RBI double from Jana James and two-run homer from Megan Gibson.
Nicholson added one final run in the seventh but it would not affect the outcome. The senior tied an OSU and Big 12 Tournament record with the long ball, becoming the eighth person in OSU history and the fifth in the Big 12 to hit two in one game.
Marjorie Johnson tossed the first 4.1 innings, scattering five hits and allowing four runs off six walks and three strikeouts. Jessica Hoppock closed out the game and took the loss, falling to 13-11. Hoppock allowed three runs off three hits and one walk.
