Cowgirls Rally To Beat Kansas, 5-4
April 09, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
Shianne Cruce hit a walk off home run in the eighth inning to give
Jackie Vasquez put the Jayhawks up 1-0 after three innings, scoring on an errant throw at third base after stealing her ninth bag of the season.
The Cowgirls evened the score in the fifth on a single from Shanel Scott that allowed Ashlyn Watson to score after leading off with a double.
The biggest inning of the game was the sixth with the two teams combining for five runs off five hits. Strong winds blowing towards left field gave both teams an added incentive at hitting the long ball, but the Jayhawks were the first to take advantage.
Marjorie Johnson gave up three runs in the frame, all coming off home runs. Heather Stanley led off with a solo shot and Destiny Frankenstein hit a two-run bomb to give
The Cowgirls offense took over in the bottom half of the frame and managed to cut the lead to 4-3. After reaching first on a free pass, Megan Carey scored on a Jennie Killman groundout. Watson continued to shine at the plate, sending pinch-runner Shianne Cruce home with a single that found a hole in left center.
Scott gave the Cowgirls hope in the final frame, leading off with a double that bounced over the left field wall and moving to third on a sacrifice. The sophomore slid under the tag at home, scoring the equalizing run on a fielder's choice from Courtney Totte, but the Cowgirls would get no more and entered their fifth extra inning game of the year.
Johnson tossed the first 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing four runs, three earned, off one walk and nine strikeouts. Jessica Hoppock entered in the eighth and faced just three batters, striking out two. The sophomore earned the win in relief, improving to 12-7 on the year.
It took just two pitches for Cruce to give the Cowgirls a win in the bottom of the frame. The sophomore cranked a shot to left field to end the contest and keep OSU undefeated in extra inning games.
