Cowboy Sophomore Finishes Third at Penn Relays
April 29, 2005 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
Gray, who is in his first year with the Cowboys after transferring from the University of Portland in the fall, finished with a time of 8:53.42 in the event. That time is a new personal record for Gray, surpassing his old mark of 8:54.00 that he set at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season.
The Cowboy sophomore says his confidence was a little shaken after seeing the field of competition going into the race, but he didn't let that affect how he ran.
“To be quite honest, I was very confident going into the race until I saw who was running,” said Gray. “Coach Weis and I just went out to the track before and just talked about different things I could do to help myself out in the race.”
Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian and Chris Foster of Penn State were the only two runners to finish ahead of Gray. Naimadu finished first and Foster finished second.
The rest of the Cowboy track team is in action this weekend. Half of the squad will compete in the Williams/Laptad Invitational in Joplin, Mo., on Saturday. The other runners will run in the Cardinal Invitational on Sunday. That meet will be hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif.
