Cowgirls Fall To No. 9 Oklahoma in Nine Innings
April 28, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
The Sooners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-RBI single from Christina Enea. Tayl'r Hollis and Kristin Vesely scored on the play after reaching on a walk and single, respectively.
OSU pulled within one in the fourth when Shanel Scott raced home on a wild pitch from OU's Stacy Braddock. Scott led off the frame with a single, then moved to third on a Stephanie Nicholson double to set up the play.
The Cowgirls let a prime scoring opportunity slip away in the fifth. With runners on the corners, the Cowgirls were caught in a double rundown situation that resulted in a pair of outs and negated a leadoff double from Dominique Van Nortwick.
The Cowgirls were not deterred and evened the score in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning. Megan Carey got the frame started with a single to right field and Van Nortwick followed with a base hit that sailed over the OU shortstop. Pinch-runners entered for both Carey and Van Nortwick, and Ashlyn Watson sacrificed the duo to second and third.
The suspense continued to build and after a second out the Cowgirls loaded the bases when Lacy Darity was hit by a pitch. Scott, the Cowgirls leading hitter, came through with the clutch hit to send Kitchens home and tie the game at 2-2.
It was short-lived and the ninth inning brought the Cowgirls their first extra inning loss of the season (5-1), when pinch-runner Amber Spaulding scored on a fielder's choice from Christina Enea.
Marjorie Johnson took the loss for the Cowgirls, dropping to 12-5 on the year. The freshman allowed three runs off six hits, seven walks and 11 strikeouts. Kami Keiter earned the win for OU, tossing the final 3.2 innings in relief and allowing one run off four hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Braddock started the game for the Sooners, surrendering one run off five hits in 5.1 innings.
