Cowgirl Golfers win Big 12 Title
April 26, 2005 | Cowgirl Golf
Thurman-Young, the Big 12 Golfer of the Year, successfully defended her Big 12 individual title from a year ago by 10 strokes over Swenson and fellow Longhorn Lisa Ferrero. Thurman-Young's 212 total ties for the lowest in Big 12 Championship history.
Cowgirl sophomore Candie Herrera was steady all weekend long, and finished with a three-round total of 227, good for a tie for sixth place. Junior Karin Sjödin, who started the weekend with a one-under 71, finished in a tie for 12th place. Sophomore Mallorie Underwood, who holed in from about 100 yards out on No. 4 for an eagle, finished in 18th place. Sophomore Ali Griffin, an Edmond, Okla., native, finished with a 251.
The Cowgirls entered the final round on Sunday with a one-stroke lead over host Texas. Oklahoma State extended that lead to as many as five strokes midway through the back nine, but the Longhorns came roaring back, taking a one-stroke lead when Cowgirl junior Karin Sjödin recorded a triple bogey on No. 18.
Thurman-Young birdied No. 17, tying the two schools. On the 18th hole, with a large gallery surrounding the green, the Cowgirl senior put her ball on the putting surface, about 20 feet from the hole. Swenson's shot cleared the hazard on the front-right side of the green, but then went into the water. The Longhorn chipped on an two putted for a bogey, and Thurman-Young's two-putt par won the title for the Cowgirls.
It was Oklahoma State's fourth Big 12 Championship in five years, and the 19th league title for the Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State will next compete in the NCAA Regionals, May 5-7, at a site to be determined.
