Cowgirls Dominate Iowa State, 7-0

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team snapped a four match losing streak in style, sweeping through doubles and singles play en route to a 7-0 win over Iowa State at the Forker Courts in Ames, Iowa on Saturday.

The Cowgirls (5-10, 2-4) picked up their first 7-0 victory since an April 2003 match against Texas Tech. OSU has now defeated Iowa State (1-9, 0-8) each of the 27 times the schools have met.

“It feels very good to get a win, especially one against a conference opponent,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “Our team came out ready to play and turned in a solid performance up and down the lineup.”

The Cowgirls got off to a quick start, dispatching the Cyclones in all three doubles positions. At No. 1, junior Zana Masnic and freshman Iryna Tkachenko quickly defeated their opponents on their way to an 8-1 victory.

OSU finished the overall sweep by picking up straight set decisions in five of the six singles matches.

At No. 5 singles, freshman Jennifer Poskitt became the second member of the team to notch ten individual wins after she defeated Chrissy Derouin, 6-1, 6-2. Poskitt is now 10-4 on the year.

Tkachenko snapped a two match losing streak in commanding fashion, downing the Cyclones top athlete, Jill Palen, 6-0, 6-0.

Junior Sandra Blajer picked up her first victory of the year, coming from behind to defeat Charlotte Ljungkrantz at the No. 6 slot, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.

“A lot of positive things happened for our team today,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Everyone was able to gain confidence thanks to their victories and hopefully we will be able to steal a win tomorrow. Nebraska is a tough opponent and we are going to have to play extremely hard to get a win.”

The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow when they face No. 30 Nebraska (14-2, 5-2) at the Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb. at 10 a.m. OSU will be looking to snap a two-match skid against the Cornhuskers.
