Cowgirls Upset No. 60 Texas Tech, 4-3

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team rallied after dropping the doubles point to defeat No. 60 Texas Tech, 4-3, at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater on Friday afternoon.

The Cowgirls (7-13, 3-6) snapped a two-match conference skid by picking up victories in four of the six singles positions.

“Today's match was unbelievable,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “It is difficult to win a match after losing doubles, but our team was able to pull it off. Our girls really stepped it up in singles and we came out with a good win.”

Texas Tech (7-12, 4-6) jumped out to an early lead by claiming victories in two of the three doubles positions. The lone OSU win came at No. 3 doubles where the sophomore tandem of Lauren Simmons and Jennifer Poskitt blanked their opponents, 8-0.

The Cowgirls' fortunes quickly turned when junior Zana Masnic tallied the first OSU team point, a 6-2, 6-1 straight set decision at No. 2 singles. Simmons followed suit shortly thereafter by winning at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Freshman Iryna Tkachenko, ranked No. 79, gave OSU a 3-1 lead by defeating Texas Tech's Cigdem Duru at the No. 1 position, 7-5, 6-1. The win is Tkachenko's team- leading sixteenth of the season.

TTU evened the score at 3-3 by picking up victories at No. 6 and 4 singles, respectively.

“College tennis is a sport in which you have to use a team effort to win,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “In every match, someone has to step up. Today, Jessica fought through fatigue and cramping legs to lead our team to the win.”

Freshman Jessica Collins secured the Cowgirls' third conference victory by claiming the three set victory over Erin Hunter at the fifth position, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3. Collins has picked up victories in four of her last five outings.

The Cowgirls will be looking to build off today's success when they take on No. 55 Missouri (13-5, 4-4) tomorrow at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater at 11 a.m.

“Tomorrow is another day,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Missouri is a good team and we know that we have to be ready for them. We have played in two very tough matches and we are going to have to play just as hard tomorrow if we want to pick up another victory.”
