“I am very proud of the effort that our girls have been displaying,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “Our entire team is playing very hard and fighting for every point. Today we displayed the kind of effort that makes a coach happy.”
The Cowgirls (6-12, 2-5) claimed the early team lead after winning the doubles point. Junior Zana Masnic and freshman Iryna Tkachenko quickly downed Nida Waseem and Gia Nafarrete at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.
The sophomore tandem of Jennifer Poskitt and Lauren Simmons followed suit, defeating Caitlin Arnould and Morgan Landes at No. 3 doubles, 8-4. Junior Sandra Blajer and freshman Jessica Collins had match point at the second position when play was ended.
After taking the early lead, OSU never looked back, winning the next five singles positions.
“Everyone played extremely hard today,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “We have picked our play up significantly and are playing much better tennis throughout the lineup.
Poskitt tallied the Cowgirls second point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-2 straight set decision against Lindsey Nash at the No. 4 position. Collins followed suit, downing Amy Molden at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
Tkachenko, ranked No. 79 overall, clinched the Cowgirl victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Szilvia Szegedi at No. 1 singles.
Masnic and Simmons tallied the final OSU points at the second and third positions, respectively.
“It was good to see our girls play so hard,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “I am proud of our performance today and hope it carries over into our next match. We are going to be ready to play against Oklahoma this week.”
The Cowgirls return to action on Wednesday when they take on Bedlam Rival No. 63 Oklahoma at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater at 2 p.m.
