Cowgirl Softball Shuts Down Louisiana-Monroe
March 06, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
The first inning home run outburst marked the first time in the history of Cowgirl softball that a team hit three home runs in one inning. The last time a team had three home runs in a game was in a 6-0 win against Massachusetts at the 1998 Women's College World Series.
Shanel Scott led off with a single and didn't have to wait long to come home as Stephanie Nicholson followed with a two-run long ball. OSU chased ULM's Lindsay Rittenhouse from the game after just six batters when Courtney Totte and Jennie Killman went long.
The Cowgirls put four more runs on the board in the fourth and watched the Lady Indians send their third pitcher to the circle.
Lacy Darity and Scott led off the frame with base hits and Darity scored on an error by the Lady Indians. Totte came through with her second RBI hit of the game to send Scott home. Nicholson later scored when Totte stole second and ULM's catcher made an ill-advised throw on the swipe.
Louisiana-Monroe tried to stop the Cowgirls with a new pitcher, but in her first at-bat of the game Rachel Johnson laced a RBI double to right center to send home the eighth and final run of the game.
Neither team scored in the seventh inning and the game was called due to the mercy rule.
Jessica Hoppock tossed a one-hitter against ULM, walking two and striking out four in her fifth complete game of the year.
Oklahoma State (14-8) returns to action on Tuesday, hosting UMKC for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
