Cowgirl Tennis Blanked by Notre Dame, 7-0
March 30, 2005 | Cowgirl Tennis
“We did not perform very well today,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “We struggled having to play indoors and Notre Dame is a very tough opponent. We have a lot of work to do still and will continue to try to make improvements.” Â
The Cowgirls (4-9, 1-4) fell behind early, losing in two of the three doubles positions. The only OSU victory came at the No. 1 position where junior Zana Masnic and freshman Iryna Tkachenko picked up the 8-4 victory. Notre Dame (8-7, 1-0) claimed the team point after winning in the other two positions.
OSU's misfortunes continued in singles play where the Cowgirls lost in straight sets in all but the top position. Tkachenko, ranked No. 97 overall, took No. 44 Catrina Thompson to the third set tie-breaker at the top position before falling 6-2, 2-6, 10-3. Â
“We must improve in all aspects of our game if we expect to compete with top tier teams in the country,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “This afternoon we did not do that and it cost us the chance for a victory. We are going to have to come out prepared for our next opponents.”
OSU returns to action on Tuesday when they begin their final road stretch of the season with a 2 p.m. showdown with Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
