Cowgirl Softball Splits With Mizzou In First Big 12 Series
March 28, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
The defeats snapped streaks for both squads. OSU's win in the first game ended a 17-game winning streak for the Tigers and the Cowgirls saw a six-game undefeated stretch end in the nightcap.
Missouri scored one run in the second inning before the Cowgirls finally put runs on the scoreboard in the fifth, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-run bomb from Courtney Totte. The sophomore plated Stephanie Nicholson, who reached on a single, with her sixth long ball of the year.
Janessa Roening scored the equalizing run for the Tigers in the sixth, coming home on a sacrifice fly from Kathy Masterson but it didn't take the Cowgirls long to retake the lead.
Lacy Darity responded with her first long ball of the season, a solo bomb deep over the center field fence to give OSU a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame of regulation play.
Neither team was able to score again until the ninth inning when both squads put a run on the board but the 10th would be the difference in the game.
After scoring one on a RBI groundout, the Tigers held a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame but the Cowgirls remained focused and came up with three big hits to earn a win in their first conference game of the season.
Ashleigh Tweed started the inning on second due to the international tie-breaker and quickly scored on a single from Dominique Van Nortwick to even the score.
The bases were loaded with two outs following a fielder's choice from Ashlyn Watson, a double from Lacy Darity and a Stephanie Nicholson walk when Totte stepped up to the plate. The sophomore came up with the clutch hit, lacing a single through the right side of the Mizzou defense to send Watson home for the game-winning run.
Randi Cook improved to 7-1 in the circle, tossing the final 4.0 innings of the contest and allowing two runs off five hits. Jessica Hoppock started the game, working for 6.0 innings and allowing three runs off six hits before Cook entered.
Missouri jumped out to a quick lead in the second game, scoring eight runs off six hits, including back-to-back home runs to close out the second inning. Sarah Stringer knocked in the first run of the frame and Leanne Bowers followed with a two-RBI double to right field to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Five batters later Heather Kunkel connected on her eighth long ball of the year, a grand slam to center field. Masterson followed with a solo shot to give Mizzou a commanding 8-0 lead after just two at-bats.
The Tigers plated three additional runs in the third and one in the fourth en route to a 12-0 win in five innings.
The Cowgirls had just one hit in the contest, a single from Tara Jeffery in the second inning.
