Cowgirls Stumble at BYU, Lose 6-1
March 15, 2005 | Cowgirl Tennis
Oklahoma State's women's tennis was unable to get anything going against regional foe Brigham Young, falling 6-1 at the BYU Indoor Tennis Facility on Monday.
“We really struggled to get good production today,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “When you are playing a team that is as talented as BYU, you really have to perform well if you are going to have a chance to win. They are the top team in our region and demonstrated why today.”
OSU (4-7, 1-3) fell behind early after getting swept in doubles play. OSU has lost the early lead in all seven of their losses this season.
BYU (11-2, 1-0) kept the pressure on the Cowgirls, winning the next five individual matches to take a 6-0 lead.
Freshman standout Iryna Tkachenko was able to avoid the sweep by picking up a hard fought victory at No. 1 singles. The country's 93 rd ranked individual downed Lauren Jones in the tie-breaking third set, 6-2, 6-7, 10-2.
“Iryna continues to perform very well for us at the No. 1 singles and doubles slots,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “She is a key component to us being successful and is having an outstanding year so far.”
