Cowgirls Overcome Wind to Down Wildcats, 4-3

“It is very difficult to play well when the ball is moving so much because of the wind,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “I am very proud of our girls. Hopefully they will use this victory as a way to gain confidence. It is good to finally be on the winning side of a 4-3 match.”
The Cowgirls (4-6, 1-3) started things off by picking up the doubles point. At No. 3 doubles, juniors Zana Masnic and Sandra Blajer won 8-4 over Fernanda Da Valle and Tereza Prochazkova.
The Wildcats (4-4, 1-1) pulled even with a victory at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Iryna Tkachenko and Jana Kubicikova gave OSU the 1-0 team lead by downing Maria Rosenberg and Tamar Kvaratskhelia 8-4 at the top position.
“Doubles was crucial for us to win today,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Our doubles lineup is performing very well for us. If we are going to be successful the rest of the year, we have to get performances like we did today from the doubles lineup.”
Sophomore Lauren Simmons extended the Cowgirl lead to 2-0 after picking up the straight set victory at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
KSU tied the match by winning the next two team points at No. 3 and 2 singles, respectively.
Tkachenko, ranked No. 93 in this week's polls, notched OSU's third point of the afternoon, a 7-6, 6-2 win at the No. 1 position.
The Cowgirls' first conference win of the season was secured by Poskitt at the No. 6 position. Poskitt rallied after a difficult first set to defeat Da Valle 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
“When we started playing today I made a lot of mistakes,” Poskitt said. “In the second set I started to play smarter because I didn't want to let the team down. I wanted to play my best and help the team pick up the win.”
In the final match of the day, freshman Jessica Collins was unable to hold of Prochazkova at No. 5 singles, falling 2-6, 6-0, 7-6.
The Cowgirls return to action on Monday when they face No. 24 BYU at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Facility in Provo, Utah at 10 a.m.
