Softball Opens Season With Two Wins
February 06, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State jumped out to a 2-0 start for the first time in three years behind strong pitching. Sophomore Jessica Hoppock and freshman Marjorie Johnson each struck out 12 batters in complete game efforts.
The Cowgirls scored two runs in their first at-bat of the 2005 season and never looked back. OSU plated two more in the fifth and three in the final frame. The Cowgirls touched New Mexico State's Sarah Seagraves for 12 hits, pushing home four earned runs and scoring three more off five Aggie errors.
In the opening frame, Shanel Scott led off with a single and crossed home plate on a two-out single by Dominique Van Nortwick. Van Nortwick then scored the second run of the day on a base hit from Courtney Totte.
In the fifth inning, Scott doubled in Lacy Darity and Nicholson followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Nicholson then stole second and Scott raced home on the attempted tag at second.
The Cowgirls scored three runs in the final frame off a wild play that started with a single from Nicholson. The Aggies centerfielder had problems fielding the ball and Ashleigh Tweed and Scott rounded the bases. As the play continued, Nicholson reached home safely on an error by the catcher.
Hoppock picked up the win against New Mexico State, striking out 12 and scattering six hits in the complete game effort.
Against Kansas, Van Nortwick gave the Cowgirls an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after connecting for a two-out double down the right field line.
Kansas evened the score on a Cowgirl error in the top of the fourth but OSU didn't wait long to regain the lead, scoring again in the bottom of the frame. Van Nortwick led off the frame with a single and Darity entered as a pinch runner. After a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch to move her to third, Darity scored on a hit from Shianne Cruce.
The Jayhawks once again tied the score in the fifth but the Cowgirls came through with the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame. Scott got the rally started with her second hit of the contest and moved into scoring position on a ground out from Nicholson. Carey came through with the timely hit, sending Scott home on a double deep into right center.
Johnson earned the win in her debut as a Cowgirl, fanning 12 batters and allowing two runs on three hits.
