Cowgirl Softball Upsets No. 3 UCLA
February 27, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State's softball team scored two runs in the first inning and went on to upset third-ranked UCLA, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Palm Springs Classic.
The Cowgirls jumped on the Bruins early and relied on defense to secure the win.
After three singles to load the bases, Dominique Van Nortwick plated Stephanie Nicholson with a base hit to center field. Courtney Totte scored what would prove to be the game-winning run when Tara Jeffery earned a free pass to first in the following at-bat.
UCLA buckled down after the first frame, holding the Cowgirls hitless for the remainder of the game and allowing just five base runners.
The Bruins plated one run in the fifth, scoring on an error by the Cowgirls, but OSU's defense held tight for the 2-1 win.
Marjorie Johnson went the distance on the mound, allowing one run off four hits, five strikeouts and one walk.
