Cowgirl Tennis Falls on Tournament's Opening Day, 4-3

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team split the individual matches, but lost the doubles point in a 4-3 loss against No. 21 Fresno State in the opening round of the Lady Rebel Classic in Las Vegas on Friday. The Cowgirls (1-5, 0-2) held early leads at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions after fallin the No. 2 slot. The Lady Bulldogs (2-2) were able to rally, sweeping the doubles point and taking the early team lead. "It is very difficult when you lose so many 4-3 matches," said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. "It hurts especially when you have the chance to beat a quality opponent like we played today. We are able to take many positives and will hopefully continue to improve." OSU quickly tied the match score when sophomore Lauren Simmons, playing up a spot in the lineup, defeated Courtney Jantz at the No. 4 position in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Fresno State reclaimed the lead for good, picking up the tightly contested victories at the No.'s 2, 5 and 3 positions, respectively. Fresnman Iryna Tkachenko added another victory to her young career, defeating Lucia Tallo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Jennifer Poskitt followed suit, defeating Fadzai Masiyazi in the tie-breaking third set, 6-2, 6-7, 10-7. "Jennifer played very well for us," Lubicz-Majewski said. "She faced a girl that changed her style of play in the middle of the match and was able to hold on for the victory. We are proud of the effort she gave today." The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow when they face Northern Arizona in the second round of the tournament at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at 2 p.m. "We know the thing that we have to do is pick up the victory in the doubles positions," Lubicz-Majewski said. "We will continue to experiment with our lineup in order to find a successful combination. Tomorrow we know that we need to win the doubles point in order to be successful." Singles 1.
