Softball Closes Out Three-Game Homestand Against Panhandle State
February 21, 2005 | Cowgirl Softball
Last week, the Cowgirls cruised to a pair of run-rule wins, defeating Oklahoma City, 17-8, and Oklahoma Baptist, 9-0. The bats were hot all week as the Cowgirls hit .481 as a team and had a .731 slugging percentage. Stephanie Nicholson finished the week 3-for-4 with two doubles, one home run, three RBI and four runs. Megan Carey also connected on a pair of doubles and a long ball in her three hits, earning four RBI and scoring three runs. Randi Cook earned the start in both contests, tossing the first shutout of her career against OBU. In nine innings, Cook allowed one run off seven hits and two walks. The sophomore finished the week with a 0.78 ERA.
OSU has now won four straight dating back to a 3-2 win against then-13th-ranked Oregon at the Louisville Slugger Desert Invitational in Las Vegas.
HEAD COACH MARGARET REBENAR
Margaret Rebenar is in her 26th season season as a softball coach at Oklahoma State and fourth as a head coach. Rebenar joined the Cowgirl softball program in 1980 after serving as a pitching coach at UCLA for one season. After filling the assistant coach role for 22 seasons, Rebenar was named the head coach in 2001. Rebenar led the 2003 Cowgirls to a second-place finish in the Big 12 regular season race and their first NCAA Regional appearance in five years. Under her guidance, 23 players have earned All-American status 29 times, including Olympians Michele Smith, Melanie Roche and Lauren Bay. Rebenar brings a 102-70 record as a head coach into the Panhandle State game. Hitting the century mark was an exciting game for Rebenar as the Cowgirls staged a come-from-behind victory at UNLV, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to earn a 4-1 win.
SCOUTING OPSU
Panhandle State picked up its first win of the season against Eastern New Mexico last weekend at the Angelo State Softball Classic. Overall the Lady Aggies are 1-8 on the season. Prior to playing the Cowgirls in Stillwater, OPSU opens its home season against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Monday, Feb. 21. In the lone win of the season, Jennifer Costeldia led an 11-hit attack and was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. Adrianne Sandall held Eastern New Mexico scoreless for five innings, scattering four hits over six innings and walking two en route to the win.
