Cowgirls Blanked by Texas, 7-0
February 20, 2005 | Cowgirl Tennis
OSU (1-4, 0-2) lost in doubles play for the fourth time on the season. The Cowgirls are 0-4 in matches in which they have failed to tally the early lead.
At the No. 1 position, freshmen Iryna Tkachenko and Jana Kubicikova fell against No. 32 Katie Ruckert and Kendra Strohm, 8-4.
“Not winning in doubles is really hurting our team,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “It is difficult to beat quality opponents like the teams in our conference when you start out down 0-1. We are going to have to continue to juggle the doubles pairings and find a combination that will be successful.”
The Cowgirls were unable to get anything going in singles play, falling in all six matches. Texas (5-0, 3-0) clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 Ruckert decision over junior Zana Masnic at the No. 3 position.
Cowgirl sophomore Jennifer Poskitt fell in a close 9-8 decision against Ristine Olson at the No. 6 position. Due to time constraints, the No. 5 and 6 singles were scored in an eight game pro-set.
“Texas is a quality opponent for us,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “We are going to have to use some of the things that we learned from this match to get ready for our opponents this weekend.”
OSU returns to action this weekend when they travel to Las Vegas to play in the UNLV UNLV Lady Rebel Classic. The Cowgirls will face No. 21 Fresno State on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
