Cowgirls Unable to Overcome Early Deficit, Fall 4-3
February 15, 2005 | Cowgirl Tennis
“We played a very good team and gave it a lot of effort,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “Colorado is not an easy place to play. They have difficult courts and it is hard to see sometimes. Our girls played hard in a difficult environment. We had the chance to win today, but couldn't finish the match out.”
The Cowgirls (1-3) led at the No. 3 doubles position, 5-3, before CU's Jenny Hanson and Lynzee Kever rallied for the 8-5 victory over sophomores Jennifer Poskitt and Lauren Simmons. Colorado (5-1) took the team lead with a victory at the No. 2 doubles position.
Junior Zana Masnic and freshman Iryna Tkachenko notched the Cowgirls' only doubles victory, an 8-6 decision at the No. 1 slot over Kendra Strandemo and Martina Sedivec.
“Doubles positions have really been hurting us this year,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “We are steadily improving, but still have work to do. We are going to continue to find the right match for our doubles teams so that we can continue to compete.”
The Cowgirls and Lady Buffaloes split the six singles position.
At the top slot, Tkachenko defeated No. 76 Kever in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. The victory was Tkachenko's second over a ranked opponent this year. She has won all four of her individual matches in straight sets.
OSU also notched individual victories at the No. 5 and 6 positions. At No. 5, Simmons held off the late charging Sedivec, 6-0, 7-5. Poskitt followed suit at the No. 6 position, downing Gleisy Torres Torres in the tiebreaking third set, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(10).
“Lauren and Jennifer have really been playing well for us,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “They continue to improve with each match. Their positions are important to the success of the team. It is good to have productive players in the bottom half of your line-up.”
The Cowgirls return to action on Saturday when they travel to Austin to take on No. 13 Texas at the Pennick-Allison Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
