Cowgirls Pick up Season's First Victory, 5-2

The Cowgirls (1-2) survived a substantial rain delay to defeat the Lady Mavericks (0-2) for the seventh time in school history. OSU has never lost to their Southland Conference opponents.
“This was a very good win for us,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “The entire team played very well in picking up the victory. From top to bottom, our girls deserved to win today.”
OSU took the early team lead by picking up two of the three doubles points. At the top position, the freshman tandem of Iryna Tkachenko and Jessica Collins downed Anete Rozkalne and Monika Peciulionyte, 9-8.
Sophomores Lauren Simmons and Jennifer Poskitt secured the doubles point by defeating Gretel Hach and Jessica Shepard at the No. 3 position, 8-4.
The Cowgirls continued their strong play in the singles bouts, picking up victories in four of the six slots.
At the top singles position, Tkachenko continued her dominance on the year, dispatching Peciulionyte in a quick 6-1, 6-0 straight set decision.
“Iryna has been playing very well for us,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “She has been very consistent and is very difficult to beat. She does so many things well that she makes it a difficult match for her opponents.”
UTA evened the team score at 2-2 after picking up victories at the No. 3 and 4 positions.
Poskitt gave the Cowgirls the lead for good by defeating Shepard at the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-1.
Kubicikova clinched the Cowgirls first victory of the season in come from behind fashion, defeating Pavla Mesterova, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 slot. The win was the first of the semester for Kubicikova.
“Jana really stepped up for our team,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “We asked her to play with more patience then she usually does. Her performance gave our team the big win today.”
Simmons rounded out the day for the Cowgirls by defeating Gretel Hach at the No. 5 position, 6-4, 6-2.
