Cowboys Face Bulldogs
Oklahoma State will travel to Seattle, Wash., this week to take on the ninth-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Key Arena in the Comcast Battle in Seattle. Tipoff is set for 2:51 p.m. Central time, and the game will be televised by CBS Sports. The Cowboys are 6-2 this season and coming off a 68-64 loss to Northwestern State on Monday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. It was OSU’s first loss at home to a non-conference opponent in 45 contests. Gonzaga is 4-2 overall this season and coming off a 99-96 loss at Washington on Sunday night. The Zags play Washington State at home on Thursday night. Gonzaga won the only meeting between these two teams with a 78-75 win in last year’s All-College Classic.
On Television
Saturday’s game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports. Gus Johnson will handle the play-by-play duties while Bill Raftery will provide color commentary. This game will mark Oklahoma State’s 44th appearance on CBS. The Cowboys own a 26-17 record when being televised on CBS, and the Pokes are 78-55 all-time on national television.
About the Bulldogs
Gonzaga is 4-2 overall this season with both losses coming against ranked opponents. The Zags defeated 23rd-ranked Maryland and No. 12 Michigan State at the Maui Invitational, but fell to third-ranked Connecticut in the finals, 65-63. Their other loss was earlier this week to No. 12 Washington, 99-95. Junior forward Adam Morrison leads the nation in scoring, averaging 29.7 points per game, while senior center J.P. Batista is also averaging more than 20 points per contest. The Bulldogs are averaging 85.5 points per game, but also giving up 81 points per contest. Gonzaga is coached by Mark Few.
Last Time Against Gonzaga
Stephen Graham scored 22 points and John Lucas added 19, but the Cowboys could not overcome five different Gonzaga Bulldogs scoring in double figures as the Zags defeated OSU 78-75 last season in the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City. The Pokes were ranked No. 3 and Gonzaga was ranked 12th in the early season matchup. The Bulldogs shot 57.4 percent from the floor to overcome being outrebounded 40-31. JamesOn Curry had five points for OSU in 16 minutes. Gonzaga’s Adam Morrison led his team with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
Starting the Season off Right
Over the past six seasons, Oklahoma State has never started worse than 8-2 through its first 10 games of the season, and twice the Pokes started off a perfect 10-0. OSU has started the past three seasons 9-1. During a span of the last nine years (including this season), Oklahoma State has accumulated a record of 78-10 (88.6 percent) in the first 10 games of each season.
Last Time Out
Oklahoma State lost at home for the first time in 45 games against non-conference opponents as the Northwestern State Demons upset the Cowboys 68-64 Monday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. It was a defensive battle all the way and NSU came out on top. Clifton Lee led all scorers with 24 points for the Demons on 10-of-17 shooting and also had nine rebounds. Jermaine Wallace added 15 for NSU, including three treys. For the Cowboys, Jamaal Brown came off the bench and scored a team-high 18 points, including five three-pointers. David Monds added 12 for the Pokes. Sophomore JamesOn Curry was held scoreless for the first time in 29 games. His 21 minutes played were also his fewest since Jan. 24 at Oklahoma when he played 17, a span of 24 contests.
Johnson Garners Big 12 Rookie of the Week Honors
Junior Torre Johnson was the second Cowboy in three weeks to be named the Big 12 Conference’s Rookie of the Week, for the period ending Dec. 4. He averaged 14.5 points and six rebounds in two OSU wins last week. Torre averaged 27 minutes off the bench, shooting 12-of-20 (.600) from the field and 5-of-6 (.833) from the free throw line. He had a career-high 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting in an 80-62 win over UNLV. He followed with a 12-point, seven-rebound effort in a 64-54 victory over SMU. He is second among OSU scorers with 12.1 points per game and has posted double digits in six of eight contests this season.
